Vision For Citizenship

Vision for Citizenship

Around October 2012, the government of Victoria, through the Office of Multicultural Affairs and Citizenship (OMAC), issued a draft Vision statement seeking submissions from the public.

Just a few days before closing date Paul Tonson (Uniting Church) and Rod Bower (Rationalist Society) prepared and distributed a submission seeking signatories.

The Submission gained strong support from a range of people active in education. These included members of both faith and freethought associations and and academics from several universities.

The signatories all supported two key elements in the Citizenship statement:

  •  the need for students in all schools to participate in studies of the variety of beliefs in Australian societies, and
  • the participation of community members in school programs in appropriate ways.
